My wife and I moved to Ecuador and have been living there for 5 years as voluntary missionaries. It has been said that complete immersion is the fastest way to learn a language, and this is true. From the time we have spent living in Ecuador we have learned to enjoy the Spanish language and the Latino culture. Translating does not amount to simply translating words. It is about translating ideas and concepts.

Sadly, it seems that many translators fail to grasp this simple concept.

In my travels I have seen pamphlets, web-sites and other materials translated into Spanish. In most cases these are professionally-made products that are obviously expensive to produce. Sometimes the translation is well done and understandable. I have also seen terrible translation jobs. For example, a pamphlet I discovered in a lawyer's office described how to get a divorce. The translation was disgraceful. There were spelling errors, major grammatical errors, made-up verbs (Tex-mex), and there was not one accent mark on the entire pamphlet. The company spent a considerable amount of time and money and printing those worthless pamphlets but obviously didn't spend much on translation services. (Google is not a good way to translate materials)
It is my goal to become the best translator possible. I speak Spanish fluently and also have much experience in public speaking in English and Spanish. As of May 2008 I am in Ohio and will be here for another month. From there I head to the Minnesota area for another month and then my wife and I travel back to Ecuador.
We currently don't have internet (in Ecuador), but are investigating the cost of a satellite connection. From May to August I will be in the US and have a connection available, so feel free to contact me for further information.
Thank you!
